Ministry of Work’s ‘Butterfly Type’ Plan
In the 1950s South Hill Park was owned by the BBC. Plans were drawn for the building to function as the European Services section. Buildings were to be built to minimum austerity standards following the ‘Butterfly type’ plan. Materials from the BBC Written Archive were used to create cyanotype butterfly prints with copper foil; referencing the ‘Silver Studded Blue Butterfly’ a rare visitor to South Hill Park.
In addition, workshops were held outdoors to create willow and tissue butterflies for an outdoor installation by adults and children on the yew arch in the garden.
